One of the most
interesting architecture monuments of this region are Orthodox Churches,
spread all over the former Sanok’s land. These are the remainings of
Bojkowie, £emkowie and Ukraine nations. These people, who were of Orthodox
and Greek Catholic religion, built those amazing temples – Orthodox
Churches.
They differ to place and time of their built. Here you can encounter
typical three-part, wooden Orthodox Churches as well as stone ones with
domes.
First Orthodox Churches were built at
the beginning of 16th century. These temples were established few years
after the village was built. It was a three-part construction with a tower,
through which one could get into the nave and the presbytery.
The ceiling of the nave resembled the
sky. The dome symbolized usually unity of faithful. The outside domes
represented:
- semicircular – good graces from heaven and
God’s care
- upwards – people’s aspiration for the God’s
closeness
- onion-like – the sign of prayer.
Nave is separated from the presbytery with the iconostas. It covers the
parts, which should not be seen by the people. They can only see the
figures of Saint and prophets. Presbytery is linked to nave with three
door. They are Tsar’s gates situated inside the iconostas. Those gates
were only opened during the prayers and only the priest could go through
them. |
